About ISM

Interpretative Structural Modeling / Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) is a general purpose analysis and decision support technique. It was invented by John N. Warfield. It provides a structured method for dealing with complex situations. It generates a visual map of the situation (or problem) that is used to obtain new insights, and construct new approaches to the problem at hand. ISM incorporates pair-wise comparison, Transitive Logic and Concept Synthesis to construct a visual map of the situation.

Structural Self Interaction Matrix
(SSIM)

The Structural Self-Interaction Matrix is ​​a matrix containing relationships
between elements that represent the respondent's perceptions of the objective elements.
The SSIM filling process is expressed in four codes: V, A, X, and O. The VAXO symbol is used to
describe the contextual relationship between two variables.
  1. The symbol V represents a relationship from i to j but not in both directions.
  2. The symbol A represents a relationship from j to i but not in both directions.
  3. The symbol X represents a relationship from i to j and j to i.
  4. The symbol O represents no valid relationship between the variables.

depicting driven and dependent power. Available matrices include the Reachability Matrix (RM).
Reachability Matrix is ​​a matrix that displays changes from SSIM form to binary numbers
to describe how strong the driver power and dependent power are.
